Ailingen, St. Johannes Baptist

Renovation of the Kiene-Orgel from 1897 | III/33 | 2017

History of the church
In the 1950s the old church, with its late gothic choir (c. 1500), nave (1625) and neo-gothic fittings (1862 onwards), became too small for the congregation. It had suffered damage over the years, above all in the air raids on Friedrichshafen and the decision was taken to build a new church. In 1958 the old church was demolished and the new building dedicated by suffragan bishop W Sedelmeier on 6-7 June 1959.

History of the organ
The present-day organ was completed in 1897 by the firm of Anton Kiene in Waldkirch as a fully pneumatic instrument. In 1928 the missing tin front pipes requisitioned in the First World War were replaced in zinc by Reiser of Biberach. A Lieblich Posaune 16 was probably added at the same time.
When the church was demolished in 1958 the organ was removed and placed in store. On re-installation in the new church, the Schwellwerk, originally sited adjacent to the Hauptwerk, had to be erected on the other side of the gallery to leave the central window clear. This could only be achieved by using electric action, which is why the instrument today has two different actions – pneumatic for Hauptwerk and Pedal, electric for the Schwellwerk. However, the organist, seated at the original console in front of the Hauptwerk, had limited control over the enclosed division. Then, in 1986, a member of the congregation in Ailingen single-handedly installed an electric console in the middle of the gallery, thereby giving the player a more balanced aural picture of the two sections.

Renovation and enlargement
A romantic organ of 1897 with full complement of original pipework (apart from case pipes) is a rarity. After 55 years of temporary existence the instrument needs to be technically and tonally integrated into the building. To this end the voicing was carefully adjusted to suit the acoustics of the new church. An additional Schwellwerk was built and hung alongside the windows on the west wall of the church, providing brighter baroque sounds formerly missing from the Kiene organ. Thanks to its central position the new division is ideally suited to the accompaniment of choir and orchestra. Furthermore a new mobile electric console is provided for use, as required, in various different positions on the gallery.
