Kloster Oesede, St. Johann

Neubau mit Wechselschleifen | II/15 | 2017 | Opus 1008

The Church

Kloster Oesede is part of the town of Georgsmarienhütte (Kreis Osnabrück) and was until 1803 the site of a Benedictine nunnery. The former convent church, now the parish church, dates from the 12th century and, together with the surviving convent buildings of 1723, forms an important architectural monument of regional importance. The church itself, a single-naved building with transepts and ribbed vault has various late gothic additions. Of the former twin-towered west front only the north tower has been preserved. The interior is characterised by plain white walls and sand-coloured arches and pillars. The neo-romantic organ gallery occupies most of the western bay.

The New Organ

The former defective organ of 1901 (Haupt IIP/21) was removed in the course of a renovation the church interior in 1985 and for the next 30 years the church was without a suitable instrument. Stored at that time in the roof space were a number of historic metal and wooden pipes, the oldest dating back to 1670 and thus the oldest in the diocese. These were thoroughly restored and integrated into the tonal design of the new organ, with the old substance of 200 pipes representing 22% of the total of 912.

13 stops provide a well-developed manual division with a rich variety of colour. Based on 16-foot, they include Principal and Flute choruses 8-4-2, an 8-foot string, two mutations and the obligatory crowning mixture, plus two characterful reeds. The Pedal at the rear comprises two extended 16-foot stops providing a proper, well-defined bass.

9 stops are made available on the second manual by means of alternate sliders (Wechselschleifen). This allows avoids the need for a second manual division whilst affording the main manual a complete and comprehensive specification. Placing all the pipes on the same windchest and at the same level avoids tuning problems due to differing temperature levels.

The sub-octave coupler in manual II allows further expansion of tonal resources and a significant increase in gravitas. Apart from the Prinzipal on display, all the pipes are enclosed in a swellbox, thus providing dynamic expression. The church has an atmospheric and resonant acoustic which carries the organ sound forward and with tangible presence. In all, an instrument of this size gives organists unforeseen possibilities of warmth, colour and power together with lyrical expression and resplendence.

The temperament is gently unequal after Janke III. In addition, the extremely sensitive voicing makes for good-blending qualities, notwithstanding the character of individual stops. The convincing results, as testified by the formal assessment report, make this one of the most beautiful organs in the Diocese of Osnabrück.

The already perfected alternate slider (Wechselschleife) system used in the new organ incorporates further refinements. A special method of construction which eliminates the weight of the keys from the overall mass of the action and the use of extremely light and stable carbon-fibre trackers both contribute to a constantly light and articulation-sensitive touch, even with couplers engaged. Each manual has its own action tensioner, made self-adjusting through the use of small wedge bellows. The wind supply is stable, yet not inflexible, and its construction even allows a slight rise in pressure during large chordal playing.

The case design and arrangement of front pipes follow traditional principles. The curved upper parts of the case follow the line of the vault and other elegantly curved elements reflect the shape of the arches in the nave. Red pipe shades and shadow lines in the frieze give the oiled oak finish a colourful accent. The restrained, understated modern design language fits in harmoniously into the Romanesque surroundings.
